Bailey, McFarland Winners in Twin 75s at ODS ..July 19, 2003
Jack Bailey won his first feature event in 2003, and Mark
McFarland continued his dominance as he took home win number nine in 2003 Saturday night
at the Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas in the twin 75 lap features for the Dodge Weekly
Series Late Model Stock Cars.
Bailey started from the second spot in the first 75 lapper, and battled Mike Southard for
the early lead. McFarland, who had started from the 5th spot, battled his way
up through the field, but got tangled up with Southard as the two drivers battled for the
second position. Both cars were sent to the rear of the field. Bailey, in the meantime,
was busy holding off Andreas Kestermann, but Kestermanns Chevy began running hot and
he was forced to pit. This put Brian Jenkins in the second spot, but he was no match for
the young Ford driver. McFarland came up through the field and managed to pass Jenkins
with just two laps to go, but came up a bit short at the end and settled for second behind
Bailey. Finishing third was Jenkins, followed by David Quackenbush, and Dave Carter.
In the second 75 lap event, McFarland took over the top spot from polesitter Dave Carter
early in the event, and breezed home to his ninth win of the season. Bailey, who had
started from the fifth position, worked his way up through the field and brought his ride
home to a second place finish. Rounding out the top five were Andreas Kestermann, Richard
Boswell II, and Stan Owens.
Willard Lawrence picked up his third win in 2003, holding off point leader Chris Donnelly
for the win in the 50 lap feature for the Redman Fleet Service Grand Stocks. The win puts
Lawrence just four points behind Donnelly in the points chase. Following Lawrence and
Donnelly across the stripe was Jim Todd Jr. John Tolliver, and Ron Jardine.
Vince Langan battled Colt White for several laps, then took over the top spot and won his
second feature of the season in the 30 lap Mini Stock event. Finishing third was Bill
Briggs, followed by point leader Mike Carte, and Tom Beckman.
Jamie DeMattio won his first feature in 2003, holding off a determined James Lucas for the
checkers in the 25 lap Gaston Automotive Speedway Sportsman feature. The two drivers
exchanged paint on several laps, with both cars getting sideways on numerous occasions.
But DeMattio held on, and beat Lucas to the line by a car length. Jeff Kauffman finished
third, while Joe Edwards finished fourth.
Roger Austin Jr. picked up his third win in a row in the 30 lap INEX Legends feature.
Austin held off defending track champ Kyle Hendershott throughout the feature event, and
won by two car lengths. Jason Miller came home in the third spot, followed by Rick Bowman,
and Nick Carlson.
In the special BDE Racing Series Truck events, Amanda McDermott won the 20 lap feature for
the Pro Mini Trucks, and Mike Hawkins took home the win in the 15 lap Pro Modified Truck
feature.
Next Saturday night, the Late Models compete in twin 75 lap events. Also on the schedule
are twin 50 lap Grand Stock events, along with a 30 lap Mini Stock feature, and a yet to
be determined Speedway Sportsman feature. Qualifying begins at 5:15 PM, with racing action
set for 7:00 PM.
