Thanks To Isabel............9/20/03
Not only did Hurricane Isabel bring massive quantities of
rain and wind to the area, but she also brought massive power outages throughout the
region. In addition, she brought to a screeching halt the activities scheduled at the Old
Dominion Speedway in Manassas VA. As of 5:30 PM, power had still not been restored at the
famed 3/8 mile oval. "We were told that we would have power by 1 PM, so we went with
that and planned to run our program. But as 1 PM approached, we were then told 3, and then
told not until at least 5:30 PM, and that was a maybe," said track owner Steve Britt.
"So we went ahead and made the call to cancel everything, including our kart racing
program we had scheduled for Sunday since we were not sure when the power would be
back," he added.
As of this release, the Popeye's 200 will be scheduled for next Saturday night, the final
oval track weekend of the 2003 season. That event, along with the Legends, Grand Stocks,
Mini Stocks, and Speedway Sportsman will conclude the Dodge Weekly Series season at ODS.
The Late Model division has been wrapped up, but the 4 remaining divisions are still up in
the air.
The Grand Stock division is down to 2 drivers battling for the championship, Chris
Donnelly and Willard Lawrence. Donnelly currently has a 14 point advantage going into the
final night. In the Mini Stock division, just 20 points separates the top 3 drivers, with
Mike Carte leading Colt White by 16 points and Tom Beckman by 20. James Lucas leads the
Speedway Sportsman division over Jaime DeMattio by a mere 6 points. Roger Austin Jr.
currently leads the INEX Legends division by 10
points over Kyle Hendershott.
Qualifying
begins at 5:15 PM next Saturday night, with racing taking the green at 7:00 PM.
